I need this for an essay. Im supposed to be asking what is the significance of using yams(currency) to the Ibo culture. Then I need to make connection to us Americans and how currency is important to our culture as well. Please help me and thank you.|||Well I remember the significance of kola nuts but I had to look up yams.
"According to Gikan[d]i, the yams represent three things: manhood, prosperity, and control in society. Whenever they are mentioned, or used, they are always as one of these three signs."
I'm not a US citizen but do US dollars have "In God We Trust" printed on them? Do they have "I promise to pay the bearer on demand..."
Also, dollar bills/paper money = fiat currency, no longer backed by gold. You may want to consider how important that is to US citizens. At the end of the day, the value given to the currency of choice (be it yams, gold/silver coins, shells) is upto those trading with it. Fiat currency is a bit more complicated.
Interesting topic considering the financial climate, and proposals to move towards a cashless society. Your teacher is on the ball!
