I want to start collecting foreign currency, but I can't afford to visit other countries. I don't know whether this is a stupid question but how do I get foreign currency. Do I just go to the bank? Excuse me if this question is stupid but I am only 16 an I don't know much about it.|||JJ's suggestion to do this through contacts with people who travel is good.
Generally, the larger branches of banks have currency exchanges facilities where you can buy foreign money. It isn't necessarily cheap since you can't buy (or it won't be cost effective to buy) just a single small bill usually.
You can also check stores for collectibles or coin shops for foreign money.|||You can get some types of foreign currency (usually only paper money) from your local bank, but it will cost you around $20 to make the exchange. Also, you may have to exchange a lot more money than you actually wanted in the first place.
You'd be surprised how many foreign coins get passed on in stores. I worked a cash register in high school and ended up with a ton of coins from all over the world. Maybe someone you know handles a lot of coins?
